Olesya Nedostoynaya rejects rigid distinctions between drawing and painting. In her art, different forms of expression overlap and coexist effortlessly, and she employs a wide range of techniques, producing both figurative and abstract work. Despite her versatility, there is nothing random about Nedostoynaya's art: materials, shapes and sizes are all carefully decided upon, each playing its important part in the final work.
For Nedostoynaya, the act of creating art is a physical, emotional and impulsive process. When painting, she focuses on the tactile feel of the act and on the way in which her gestures translate into images. A recurring concept in her work is the absence of a clear focal point, so that no one part is more important than another. Such paintings invite the eye to roam freely and the mind to contemplate the work as a whole.
A core theme in Nedostoynaya's art is the dichotomy between the beautiful and the tragic aspects of existence. When dealing with difficult subjects, Nedostoynaya is intent on addressing them without succumbing to a sense of hopelessness. The ambivalence of life can be overwhelming, but even when working with the darkest of tones, there is a glimmer of hope to be found in her art.
